Who we are

We believe every child has the right to a healthy and loving life.

Friends Without A Border (FWAB) is a non-profit, non-government organization that provides free, quality medical care of international standards to the children of Southeast Asia. Our guiding motto is “treat every patient as if your own child.” We provide medical care in a compassionate environment, continuing education to healthcare professionals, and improve the health, nutrition and hygiene of local communities through outreach programs. Since our inception, FWAB has treated over 2 million children in Laos and Cambodia.

As our first project, we opened Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC) in 1999 in Siem Reap, Cambodia and handed over the administration of the hospital to local management in 2013. After turning over AHC to local management, we expanded our mission of helping the children of Southeast Asia to Laos and opened Lao Friends Hospital for Children (LFHC) in Luang Prabang in 2015.

History

In 1993, Kenro Izu visited Siem Reap, Cambodia to photograph the Angkor Wat monuments when he witnessed the death of a young girl. Her death was preventable, but her father could not afford $2 for the medicine that would have saved her life. As a result of this heartbreaking experience, he founded Friends Without A Border (FWAB) in 1996. Three years later, with the support of donors around the world, FWAB built Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC). After 14 years of management, FWAB celebrated AHC’s independence by handing over control to local administrators.

Lao Friends Hospital for Children in Luang Prabang opened in February 2015 with the intent to establish a locally-sustainable hospital by and for the Lao people. 1 out of 25 children will not live to see their 5th birthday. It is all too common to die from treatable diseases, such as malaria, pneumonia, and diarrhea. LFHC, to combat these conditions, currently treats over 40,000 patients annually.

In Laos, it is common for children to die from preventable conditions, such as malaria, pneumonia, and diarrhea. Over 200,000 children in need have received free medical treatment by LFHC since opening its doors in 2015.

Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC)

In 2013 FWAB transferred the administration of the hospital to local management. Since opening its doors, AHC has treated nearly 2 million children, trained thousands of health-care professionals and was deemed “one of only three essential health-care institutions” in the entire country by a Cambodian health minister. In January of 2013, FWAB celebrated a long-held goal as Kenro handed over a heart-shaped “key to the hospital” to the dedicated staff of AHC, thus transferring the administration of the hospital to local management.

Friends Without A Border Japan is accredited by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government as a certified non-profit organization. For the donation, we will issue an acknowledgement letter to be used for a tax deduction in Japan.
